Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera (HALO) is well-loved for their Social DistanceSING! initiative—a mobile concert series affectionately referred to as “a pair of singers, a piano and a pickup truck.” Now, they’ve partnered with two other Charleston institutions—the Charleston County Public Library and Holy City Drive-In (at Patriots Point)—to extend the arts to a wider audience.
“Theatre affects every person differently,’ says Leah Edwards, General Director of HALO, ‘and because of that, we want everyone to experience it in a way that is comfortable for them.”
Seeing opera at the drive-in means customers can experience the art form without feeling insecure. Don’t like opera? It’s just people singing the Cinderella story! Don’t understand French? There are English translations! Don’t know how to dress? Come as you are! Eat popcorn, have a beverage and cuddle up with a loved one. From the privacy and comfort of their cars, audience members can escape the bizarre times in which we’re living and become a part of a fairytale.
Cendrillon, or Cinderella, is Jules Massenet’s glittering operatic adaptation of the classic story. This charming staging by Laurent Pelly, which bursts to life with wit and whimsy, stars mezzo-sopranos Joyce DiDonato and Alice Coote. The movie is from ‘The MET Opera Live in HD’ series and will be preceded by a live concert by HALO’s founders, Leah Edwards and Dimitri Pittas.
“We created the drive-in experience at Patriots Point amid the pandemic to give the Lowcountry a safe and fun way to get out of the house” explains Robert Patterson, owner of Special Ops Events and Holy City Drive-In. “Our goal was to include other forms of entertainment to enhance the drive-in experience. I can’t think of a more unique event then a drive-in opera performance. We are so excited to team up with HALO and the Charleston Library to make this happen.”
The opera screening, set for Thursday, November 19 at 7pm, marks the inaugural presentation of a multi-genre arts movie series called ‘Thursday at the Theatre,’ HALO’s latest initiative to bring joy, innovation and creativity to Charleston in a COVID-safe environment.
