How it started
In 1993, Michel Chapoutier, then 29 and the main winemaker for the family business in the Rhône Valley, was watching TV when his blind friend, musician Gilbert Montagnin, described the difficulty of shopping for wine without someone to describe it for him VinePair+1. Chapoutier didn’t want his friend to have to rely on another person to find his favorite Côtes-du-Rhône wines, so he explored whether his old printing machine could produce Braille. It turned out to be straightforward, and he decided to include the appellation, wine name, vintage, and color (red/white) in Braille on every bottle
