The Holy Smokes Lowcountry Barbecue Festival will return for its fifth annual event Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverfront Park in North Charleston, featuring more than 50 of the nation’s most acclaimed pitmasters and chefs for a one-of-a-kind culinary experience.
The event features four unique barbecue “villages” — Texas, Traditional, New School, and Coastal — where guests can taste the full spectrum of American barbecue. Expect legendary names like Rodney Scott, Chris Lilly, Pat Martin, and Jonathan and Justin Fox firing up alongside new faces such as Dave Bonner (Green Street Smoked Meats), Jill Mathias (Chez Nous), and Mike Lata (FIG and The Ordinary).

Chili Recipe
Tanya’s Award-Winning Chili 1 – 2 lbs ground beef 1 diced medium onion 2 minced garlic cloves 2 cans of tomato sauce (4 – 8 oz cans) 1 tbsp tomato paste 1 can dark kidney beans 2 tbsp cumin 2 tbsp curry powder 2 tbsp chipotle crushed peppers 2 tbsp ancho chili powder 2 tbsp cayenne powder 2 tbsp crushed red peppers 1/2 standard size dark chocolate bar 1 2.85 oz container of chili powder Salt and black pepper to taste Directions In a large Le Creuset Dutch oven, brown ground beef with onions and garlic until they are translucent. Add kidney beans, cumin, curry, chipotle crushed peppers, ancho chili powder, cayenne powder, crushed red peppers, salt and pepper. Stir. Add tomato sauce, paste, and chili powder. Place in oven at 350 for at least two hours, stirring occasionally. To finish, add dark chocolate and stir.
